EM Silage is a proprietary combination of natural microorganisms designed to create stable silage that improves the rumen activity of your stock. It can be used on grass, maize and whole crop for the production of silage with proven results over 5 years of tests in the field showing an increase in milk yield in Dairy Cows.
How does EM Silage work?
The lactic acid bacteria present ferment some of the sugars into lactic acid causing a decline in pH which results in a more stable silage (less perishable). The other bacteria and other
microorganisms cause under anaerobic circumstances (as inside a closed silo) a type of pre-fermentation resulting in the release of antioxidants and vitamins. Nutrients that are difficult to digest will be converted which will make the intake and digestion of those nutrients easier and faster for the cow. This will increase the milk yield of the cow. The odour and palatability of the silage will also change, which will be highly appreciated by the cow. A very important point is that substances will be formed inhibiting heating in the silage, which means there will be less risk of overheating once the silo is opened.
- Higher intake of silage
- Appealing taste for stock
- Less silage losses
- Reduced heating
- Lower overall costs
- Increased milk production
- Increased feed energy
Used and trialled extensively throughout Europe, EM Silage has shown the ability to not only be an effective ensiling inoculant but also improve animal health. This includes improving fertility levels within the herd and milk production. The graphs on the right show that by using EM Silage from 1999 this farm decreased the time to first calving age by 6 months, reduced the somatic cell count and also increased milk production by over 50%. EM Silage Application
It is important to obtain a good distribution of EM Silage in the crop to be ensiled. This is best achieved by spraying over the crop using a conventional hydraulic spray system.
It is recommended that 0.5 litres of EM Silage/Wet-Tonne of crop is used. Depending on the delivery system water can be added as a carrier up to 20l per tonne. It is preferable to apply EM Silage during the gathering or cutting of the crop. If you are using a sprayer that has previously held any chemical, wash the whole unit including hoses and nozzles thoroughly with a detergent and then triple rinse.
